Planning your visit
The Festival Theatre and King’s Theatre have bars on every level serving a selection of drinks and snacks, and both have cafes on the ground floor. The Studio Theatre has a bar located on the main level. The bars will be open depending on the audience numbers. Find more information under the Our Venues section.
Unless otherwise stated, it is possible to pre-order interval drinks for collection at any of the bars at the Festival Theatre, King’s Theatre or the Studio Theatre.
You can pre-order interval drinks via your VisitOne E-tickets:
Click on the Interval drinks button on the VisitOne homepage. Then browse the menu and add your desired refreshments to your basket. Once ready to checkout navigate to your basket and follow the prompts. You can then check out with Apple Pay, Google Pay, or by inputting your card details.
You’ll then receive an email receipt, and your collection point will noted on your screen. If you need to find this information again, simply navigate back to the VisitOne homepage, click interval drinks, and a summary of your order will appear on the screen.
If you have a valid Friends Membership attached to your account, you’ll automatically receive your 20% discount on your order.
Being located in the centre of Edinburgh there is limited parking space available around our venues. However, you can find further information in the Our venues section.
The Festival Theatre has a limited number of spaces available for accessible parking and pickup/drop off in the courtyard. This can also be used for the Studio Theatre. Please call our Stage Door team to book/check availability on 0131 662 1112.
The King’s Theatre is located on a busy main road and as such there is limited space for drop offs and parking. While there are no designated Blue Badge spaces on Leven Street, single yellow lines and Pay & Display bays are available on nearby side streets in the Tollcross area.
Unlike the Festival Theatre there is no on-site parking at the King’s Theatre, 3rd party websites like Parkopedia can you help you locate the nearest car park for your visit.
Capital Theatres are here to accommodate you and make sure your time with us is as enjoyable and simple as possible. Full access information can be found in each Production Show page or under the Our venues section of the website. Please call 0131 662 1112 for any further information.
It is at the discretion of the theatre but some of our shows do have a period where people are held back until an appropriate point in the production. Then they can be let in without causing too much disturbance, but for most shows we will either get you to your seat or an available seat at the back of your section.
There is a cloakroom at the Festival Theatre but not in the King’s Theatre or Studio Theatre. The Cloakroom is available one hour before the performance starts. Feel free to ask any member of staff if you wish to drop an item off.
Any item of lost property found is handed in to the stage door of our theatres. All stage doors can be contacted on 0131 662 1112. If an item is lost during your time at the theatre make sure to ask member of staff and they will be happy to check if the item has been recovered.
At Capital Theatres we try to ensure all audience members have a great experience therefore, we encourage audience members to be mindful and courteous to one another.
Is anything prohibited in the auditorium?
We aim to accommodate all customers, but a few things are not allowed in the auditorium:
- Bringing in alcohol not purchased from within the building
- No hot food or meals are to be taken in to the auditorium.
- No mobile phone use during the performance.
- Photography is not allowed unless instructed otherwise.
Please note: It is at the theatre’s discretion to conduct random bag searches.
You can find available running times on the show webpage or through the box office. If the running times are not published, please get in contact with box office on 0131 529 6000.
Please note: running times may not be available until the night of the performance.
At the Festival Theatre and King’s Theatre, programmes will be available from the foyers and will be available for purchase from staff throughout the buildings. The Studio will have programmes available at the bar area.
There’s a programme available at most performances. You can purchase them at the theatre or online when you purchase your tickets. Programme vouchers offer a discount on full-price programmes and can be redeemed with any programme seller.
Please Note: Programmes may not be available for all shows.
First time at the theatre?
There is no official dress code for coming to the theatre. Some people will show up in jeans and trainers and other people make an occasion of their theatre trip and get a bit dressed up. Basically, wear whatever you’re comfortable in!
When you arrive at the theatre, an usher will scan your ticket.
If you’ve arrived before the doors to the auditorium have opened, you can hang out in the foyer, cafe or bars; get a snack or a drink, pick up a programme from the merchandise desk, go to the toilets.
About 30 minutes before the show starts, the doors to the auditorium will open and you can head to your seats when you’re ready.
You can arrive anytime within an hour of the show starting, as long as you’re in your seat by the time the show starts. So it depends if you want to meet friends for a drink or explore the theatre, or if you just want to show up in time for the show to start.
If you want to feel as relaxed as possible with plenty of time to get situated, we recommend getting to the theatre 30 minutes before the show starts.
If you’re a wee bit late, you can usually still go to your seat. Every show will have a different agreement with the theatre about which point of the show they’re happy for latecomers to take their seats.
Ushers in the entrance of the theatre will scan your ticket and direct you to where you need to go. When you enter the auditorium, another usher will keep you at the back of the auditorium until the point at which you can head to your seat. They will use a torch to help you find the right place.
Other audience members probably won’t notice you, though you might have to squeeze past a few other people in your row. Don’t worry about this too much – wee delays happen to all of us sometimes!
Of course you can! Sometimes a solo theatre trip can be the best self-care.
At the end? During the show? When someone does something impressive? What if everyone else claps and I don’t?
If you’re not sure, just follow the crowd! Usually, you’ll clap at the end of the show, but there might be plenty of moments where the audience joins in during a performance too, like the end of a song.
And don’t worry if you get it “wrong” – there’s no secret clapping code. If something makes you want to applaud, go for it!
Of course you can! We sell snacks and drinks in the bars and kiosks throughout the building.
Bar staff will pop your drinks into a plastic cup (rather than a glass) for going into the theatre – this is to avoid spills and broken glass.
Don’t balance your glass on the edge of the balcony, if you do an usher will ask you to move it – this is to avoid dropping a drink on someone on the floor below you.
Some snacks might be distracting to your fellow audience members so just have a think about whether they will be too noisy or not.
Do I need to know the story before? Will others know more than me? Do I need to know anything about the show before I come?
You don’t need to do your homework before you come to the theatre. You don’t have to understand every word, movement or moment to enjoy a show.
Some shows tell a clear story, while others are there to make you feel, think or see something differently. And if you’re sitting there wondering “What does that mean?” — chances are, someone else is too. Trying to figure that out might be the best part about seeing a show.
Come curious, see what you make of it, and don’t worry about having the “right” reaction because there isn’t one!
If you would like some guidance you can always do a wee internet search, or buy a programme in the theatre.
