Over the past few months, the redevelopment of the King’s Theatre has moved into its final stages. Work is now nearing completion in several areas of the building, and it’s exciting to see the theatre coming back to life. Here are a few recent highlights.
A clear view
One of the most noticeable changes is outside the building. For the first time since construction began, the front of the King’s can be seen clearly again. The scaffolding and site cabins have been removed, revealing the theatre’s beautiful red sandstone façade after a careful clean. It’s a wonderful moment for the project and a real reminder of the building’s character. With the front area cleared, the pavement levelling project has been completed, allowing step-free access to the front doors.
A big step for the auditorium
Inside, the auditorium is starting to look like a theatre once more. New flooring and timber wall panelling are currently being installed, bringing warmth and detail back into the space. Over the next few weeks, both the new and restored heritage doors will be put back in place. After that comes a milestone many people are looking forward to – the return of the theatre’s seating.
Space for coffee and conversation
The new café extension is also taking shape. The walls and roof are now complete, and the skylights have been installed to bring in plenty of natural light. A new circular window has also been fitted, offering visitors a view out onto Stage Door Lane. Nearby, the new ticketing area is progressing well too, with both the ceiling and flooring now installed.
Old features in new spaces
Across the theatre, our new bars are nearly ready to welcome audiences back. Restored bar counters are in place, electrical work is continuing and banquet seating is being reinstated. If you look closely, you might spot a familiar feature; the counter from the former Tudor Bar has been carefully restored and has found a new home in the Pit Bar.

As construction continues, attention will soon turn to the final decorative details that will bring all these spaces together. Each week brings the King’s one step closer to reopening, and we look forward to sharing more updates as the project reaches the finish line.
