Here at Capital Theatres, we believe everyone should have the chance to experience the joy and fulfilment that comes from being creative.
We have created a Creative Pathways programme to showcase the wonderful and various careers young people could have in the theatre industry. One of the strands of this programme is Theatre Insights Holiday Club (supported by Cash for Kids), a perfect starting point for secondary-aged young people looking to explore different career paths, in a fun and supported setting.
Designed for 15 –18-year-olds, this four-day programme combines practical learning with creative exploration. Mornings are spent gaining insights from industry professionals while afternoons focus on devising and performing original shows. It is a fun and relevant alternative to work experience, ideal for young people ready to take the next step in their creative journey.
This year, participants stepped behind the curtain with a backstage tour and workshops in Heritage Storytelling, SFX Make-Up, Technical Theatre, Set Design, Arts Marketing, Podcasting, Spoken Word and Devising. This mix of sessions encouraged them to try out new skills and discover just how many exciting roles exist in theatre. Each person could dive deeper into what interested them most, from tech to directing, acting or design. Split into two groups, each worked with a professional artist to devise their own shows. The week culminated with two original performances, which they had created together and shared with family and friends.

We reached out to former Holiday Club participants to find out how taking part in Theatre Insights had impacted their creative journeys. The feedback was unanimously positive. Every respondent felt more creatively inspired and more likely to consider a career in the arts.
“I learned how everything comes together to make the shows.”
“I am proud of having the confidence to express myself in front of new people and to try new careers I hadn’t thought of before.”
One former attendee has since enrolled in Technical Theatre at college. Another, still in school, said:
“It gave me an opportunity to broaden my knowledge around areas I didn’t have experience in – like podcasting and the audition process.”
Alongside our holiday club we also have Theatre Insights Taster Days for 12-14 year olds, where you can get a flavour and peak at what goes on behind the scenes at Capital Theatres.
