#Stafftakeover: Matthew Halsall

Our lovely Festival Theatre Café is the perfect spot for teas and coffees, light lunches and pre-show cocktails, but what makes the Café so special for us is the staff who always welcome customers with a big smile. In our new series of #stafftakeovers, we chat to Matthew Halsall about what he loves the most at Capital Theatres.

What's your job title?

Café Manager

Describe your job or a typical working day for you

Me and my team look after the Café on the ground floor. Every day we make fresh food for the counter and serve it to whoever drops in – show days are busy as plenty of people want a bite to eat before they see the show.

How long have you worked at Capital Theatres?

Two and a half years.

What do you love most about your job?

Working with a great team of people throughout the Trust and meeting such a wide variety of customers.

What made you work in a theatre?

An empty Café in a great location!

What’s your fondest memory since working here?

Chatting with Jo Brand as I helped her take a sandwich and a pot of tea back to her dressing room – she was so friendly and interested in everything we do.

If you could switch places with a colleague for a day, what role would you like to do?

One of our maintenance crew – there are so many exciting secret spaces in the building that they have access to!

What has been your favourite show and what are you most looking forward to seeing?

Wayne McGregor’s dance piece Autobiography was spell binding and I can’t wait for Scottish Opera’s Nixon in China.

Describe Capital Theatres in two words

Friendly and inclusive.
