As part of Scottish Apprenticeship Week (2 to 6 March), let's welcome Bryony Chappels who joins Capital Theatres this month as our third, successive flying Technical Theatre apprentice.
We are thrilled to be able to offer this unique opportunity for the third time, working in partnership with Edinburgh College supported by Skills Development Scotland, thanks to funding from private philanthropy.
Since launching Modern Technical Apprenticeships in October 2023, we have enjoyed great success with this in-demand programme which aims to address the industry-wide skills gap and future-proof technical theatre skills.
During this unique training experience, our apprentices learn the art of ‘flying’- the operation of a traditional theatrical rigging system which lifts scenery to and from the stage. This is a skillset that is typically difficult to gain experience in, despite being in high demand within the industry. The apprenticeship offers hands-on training in a live theatre setting and an SCQF Level 7 Diploma in Technical Theatre and Production Operations qualification.
Growing up, our new apprentice Bryony was heavily involved in amateur theatre and operatics and developed a love for the behind-the-scenes magic, which has remained with her to this day. Since moving to Edinburgh in 2023 and working her first season with the Fringe Society, she has built a full-time career in events. She continues to work for the Fringe each year, while also working on varied and exciting events nationwide.
“Whilst I have gained valuable hands-on experience over the past three years, I am eager to complement this with formal training to refine and specialise my skills. The Flying Apprenticeship offers the ideal opportunity to do exactly that – continuing to work on inspiring productions whilst developing expertise in a highly specialised and respected field. Having long adored the Festival Theatre as a child visiting Edinburgh, the opportunity to now work there feels like a true ‘pinch me’ moment!”
Our most recent apprentice (2024-25) Joe McCowan highlights his brilliant experience of working on the variety of productions at the Festival Theatre too:
“The apprenticeship has given me opportunities to work across a wide variety of productions—musicals, operas, ballets, plays, and pantomimes—each requiring careful coordination, teamwork, and a clear understanding of safety procedures. Flying experience as well as the tips and nuances learned from the talented stage technicians in a supportive environment has provided me with a good foundation to build on as I continue in this industry.”
Mark Pringle, Head Flyman and Mentor said:
“It’s an opportunity for us to pass on our knowledge as it’s a skillset which has to be learnt hands-on, you couldn’t pass on the nuances of the role in a classroom. If you can succeed whilst learning on a stage of our size, then you’ll be able to fly anywhere.”
