Laurence Olivier brought his acclaimed National Theatre production of Uncle Vanya to the King's Theatre in 1965.
We’ve uncovered and digitised many show programmes while working on the People’s Archive — but it’s always a thrill to find one featuring a theatrical legend (or two)!
Laurence Olivier visited the King’s Theatre several times throughout his career, but his production and performance in Chekhov’s Uncle Vanya is remembered by many as a standout.
Directed by Olivier, the production began life with the National Theatre in London and saw Olivier take on the role of the Doctor, while another titan of the stage, Michael Redgrave, played Uncle Vanya.

As well as the star casting we've particularly enjoyed the vintage adverts from some well known businesses across Edinurgh and beyond.
