The Board of Capital Theatres is seeking to appoint two Directors, to replace retiring Board Members, in the autumn of 2018.

Capital Theatres is a charitable Trust which manages three of Scotland’s most prestigious theatres, all in Edinburgh - the Festival Theatre (1,900 seats), the King’s Theatre (1,300 seats) and the Studio (160 seats). The Trust presents a broad range of productions throughout the year including drama, opera, musicals and dance. In 2017-2018 more than 700 performances were staged, attracting over 430,000 customers. The Trust is a registered charity and has a separate trading company to run its commercial activities. All profits from the trading company are gift aided to the Trust. Capital Theatres also runs a thriving learning & participation programme. Through this work, we create a range of ways for people to discover and explore the performing arts, as audience members and active participants in creative projects.

There are currently two vacancies on the Board of twelve directors. Directors are responsible for agreeing strategic objectives, supporting management, and overseeing and constructively challenging the work we do. The appointments will be for an initial four year term. You do not need previous experience of serving on a board and we welcome applications from people of any age, background and experience. You should have an interest in, and some knowledge of, the performing arts in Edinburgh. We strive to ensure that our work reflects a diverse nation and are actively seeking candidates with experience or understanding of ethnic minority groups. In the interests of achieving a balanced and representative Board, applications are particularly welcome from people currently under represented on Scotland’s public bodies such as disabled people and people aged under 50.

The Trust is about to launch a public appeal to help fund a transformational redevelopment of the King’s Theatre. This will be a significant capital project that will require fundraising from government, public bodies, trust funds and philanthropists. Directors will be expected to support the executive management of the organisation in the fundraising campaign and the subsequent building project.

The Board meets approximately five times a year, generally on Tuesdays from 4.00-6.00pm at the Festival Theatre. There will, in addition, be some responsibilities between meetings, and Directors are encouraged to attend performances at the Trust’s venues during the course of the year.

These positions are unremunerated; however, reasonable travel and childcare expenses will be reimbursed. On appointment, new Board members receive formal training as part of their induction for the role.

Box Office Supervisor (Group Sales)


Capital Theatres is looking for a Box Office Supervisor to join their team and supervise the Group Sales aspect of the Box Office.

The successful candidate will have Box Office experience and have worked in Group Sales before.

They need to have a dynamic combination of leadership, selling and administrative skills with a commercial focus, as well as being completely comfortable working in a busy, call room environment.

Shifts are generally between the hours of 9am – 8pm working across all venues, with frequent weekend work. Candidates must be flexible about shift patterns.
