We're delighted to announce that Radio Forth Cash for Kids will fully fund our Schools Relaxed Performance of Sleeping Beauty, the much-anticipated panto which returns to the King’s Theatre this Christmas.
What is a Relaxed Performance?
In short, they're for anyone who would benefit from a less formal performance environment, such as customers with Autism Spectrum Disorder, sensory and communication disorders, or a learning disability.
The auditorium and the production itself are adapted; children and carers feel relaxed, free to make noise, move around, be themselves and enjoy the pantomime in a way that suits their needs. Our staff volunteer their time to help at the event and everybody is excited to be able to welcome this extra special audience back this January.
We were the first organisation in Scotland to produce a fully accessible Relaxed Performance in 2012, and these have since become an essential feature in our annual programme.
One of the highlights of the festive season... ensuring that the joy of the King’s Panto is available to all to enjoy on their own terms is crucial for usFiona Gibson, CEO Capital Theatres
The impact it has on children, young people and their families is beyond measureVictoria Hendry, Charity Manager at Radio Forth
Schools Relaxed Performances
Alongside our public relaxed performance, we also offer a Schools Relaxed Performance of Sleeping Beauty, welcoming Special Education Needs schools from across Edinburgh and the Lothians. These young people are invited every year and this year are more excited than ever – having missed the real, in-person live event last January due to the pandemic.
Due to the additional needs of children with profound and multiple learning difficulties, pantomime and indeed theatre generally, is mostly inaccessible for them and the relaxed panto is often their only theatre experience.
Radio Forth Cash for Kids & the Relaxed Panto
Thanks to Radio Forth Cash for Kids, up to 1,000 children and their support staff from 11 Special Educational Needs schools in Edinburgh and the Lothians will get this chance. Cash for Kids have supported the relaxed panto for many years – this January they are fully funding the event with in-kind support from Capital Theatres. The schools relaxed performance is completely free for all those who attend, and free transport is provided to remove all financial barriers.
